Apple TV
Apple TV is the newest project for Apples CEO Steve Jobs. It is the latest attempt to streamline the computer experience and the TV format. The latest, and second generation of Apple TV is set to hit the markets in late September, 2010. The first generation of Apple TV was released in 2006, and was met with rave reviews. Apple Inc. estimated that over 100,000 units were sold. Apple TV is expected to exceed the sales of the original model. The latest version has an Apple A4 (ARM cortex -A8) processor, with a built in 6 watt power supply. Apple TV comes with its own remote, but can be programmed to any infrared remote control. Its maximum resolution is 720p. Some critics complain that this is not able to work with widescreens and newer TV’s because of its low resolution level.
This new generation of Apple TV is a digital media receiver. It primarily obtains its content from online sources, and whatever is available in the local market. The consumer will also be able to access their videos and pictures, but they must be accessible from their PC, or via the internet. Consumers with iPods can transfer their information to the Apple Tv unit.
A minor offset to Apple TV is that it will not possess any RCA/Composite video or F/RF connectors. Therefore, all video and picture materials will need to be downloaded from their exterior source, onto the individuals’ computer hard drive. Apple Tv is compatible with Netflix, iTunes, YouTube, and many other online sources.
Apple Tv also allows for the renting of movies and tv shows, as well as streaming videos. Tv shows cost about $1, and movies range from $3 for older movies to $5 for HD new releases. The only complaint concerning the movie or tv show rentals is that they can only be acquired through iTunes. Some complaints exist concerning the lack of movie choices, and the length of time available to watch their selections. The consumer has a thirty day window to watch their selection. Once it is started, the consumer only has 24 hours to complete it.
Apple Tv has also made the unit very affordable. The second generation Apple TV runs about $99. The new units are .91 inches tall, with a width of 3.9 inches, and a depth of 3.9 inches. This makes Apple Tv compact as well. Apple Inc. has also announced that Apple Tv units and services will not only be offered in the United States, but also in six other countries around the world.
Some of the opponents to the unit complain that there is no hard drive. This means that the unit is unable to save rented movies or tv shows. It is also unable to transfer rented selections from Apple Tv to anywhere else. When the company reduced the size of the actual unit, they eliminated all intel chips from it.
The initial market impression of Apple Tv is shaky. Consumer opinion has yet to be rendered. Apple Tv will enable you to stream videos and movies. Apple Tv units are quite capable of transposing data from your computers’ hard drive to your tv screen. Apple Tv is easy to use, and consumer friendly. It offers those who do not possess technological saavy, to access information and entertainment on a new level.
